I grew up in Calgary, Canada in a hocky family. My mother lead me to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ when I was six years old. I went on to play twelve years of professional hockey. Hockey soon came to an end because of a shoulder injury, and I was faced with "what to do" with my life. I decided to attend bible college and eventually Laura and I would start Champions Church. One huge problem stared us in the face; we were dominated by sin, and we covered it up better than anyone. We really never had the answer to this life that God promises. Praise God, the biggest and most defining moment in my life would come one night as I was meeting and praying with my friend Robin Cupi. We had already started the church, and it seemed to be going fine, but Robin had the courage to look me straight in the eyes and say, "Mark, you are on another page and following another gospel. You are not preaching the message of the cross." I got mad and left his house. On the drive home, the Lord began to show me that what Robin said was right. The Lord began to turn my heart, Laura's heart and eventually our whole ministry back to the cross. Everything began to change as we would start to see our own apostasy, the apostasy of the modern church and the great and glorious message of the cross as it stood completely apposed to everything we had learned. I will ever thank Robin and the Spirit of God for rescuing me, my family and our church and showing us this glorious message that we preach. We preach Jesus Christ and Him Crucified. The sin nature has finally been made ineffective in my life. Am I perfect? No, but I finally know what it means to be free; free from the sin nature and free from religion. My chains are gone, and it's all because of the cross of Christ. Ask the Lord to show you this message because you will never be free until you understand what the cross means.
